Wellness Policy and Competitive Foods

Wellness Policy

In August 2025, the Bonsall Unified School District Board of Trustees approved an updated Wellness Policy that aligns with the most current USDA standards, enhanced the language and clarity of the policy, and incorporated best practices in nutrition education, physical activity, school-based wellness initiatives, and community engagement.

We are always looking for families, community members and district employees to join our Wellness Committee. Together, we work to develop and implement initiatives that promote the health and well-being of students.  Contact the Director of Child Nutrition Services for more information.

Competitive Foods

Competitive foods in a child nutrition program are foods that are sold during the school day AND are not part of the federal reimbursable school breakfast or lunch programs.

Competitive foods must meet federal and state guidelines.  Those guidelines consider the school day to begin at midnight before and end 30 minutes after the official school day ends.  Any foods sold during that time period MUST follow the competitive food rules attached below.

Smart Snacks

Smart Snacks are the national nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold outside of the federal reimbursable school meal programs during the school day.  This list includes products from Amazon that met the Smart Snack requirements as of the date on the document.
