From Eric Kosch, ASES Director

Dear Parent(s),

I am pleased to announce that BUSD will continue to offer the ASES Afterschool Program for the 2015-2016 school year. As many of you know Bonsall West Elementary School and Vivian Banks Charter School currently provide a daily afterschool program that serves many families in our community. While this existing program has done a fine job meeting the needs of our students and families we feel there is room for improvement. This is why we are excited to launch the 21st Century Skills Club!

The 21st Century Skills Club will run similarly to the existing Boys and Girls Club, but with noticeable changes.

Every child in the U.S. needs 21st century knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers and leaders. The goal of the 21st Century Skills Club is to fuse the core learning subjects such as English, math and science with skills students need in typical 21st century communities and workplaces.

To successfully face rigorous higher education coursework, career challenges and a globally competitive workforce, we must align learning environments with real world environment. We can do this by proving increased opportunities in Learning and Innovation, Self Management Skills, as well as Information, Technology and Media.

We will do this by providing students:
  • Enrichment opportunities that support creativity and innovation.
  • Daily homework assistance that reinforces critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Opportunities for increased communication, collaboration and leadership skills.
  • Teacher led interventions utilizing state of the art technology platforms.
  • Health and nutrition through structured opportunities for physical education and development.
The 21st Century Skills Club is funded through a state grant (ASES), there is no fee. The program operates everyday school is in session, from dismissal time until 6:00pm. ASES is not daycare. We have state grant requirements and local expectations for our student’s attendance and behavior in the program. The program follows the regular school calendar and is closed for school holidays and breaks. Early enrollment is highly recommended as space will fill up fast.
